Assessing manchester united's 2022/23 squad

Erik Ten Hag's first team squad With the transfer window shut, now seems the best time to assess the talent within Erik's squad.  This will be arranged by position, with a little overall assessment done afterwards.  Let's get stuck in! Transfer window ins Antony (£85.5 million from Ajax) Casimero (£63.59 million from Real Madrid) Lisandro Martinez (£51.63 million from Ajax) Tyrell Malacia (£13.50 million from Feyenoord) Christian Eriksen (Free after being released by Brentford) Martin Dubravka (Loan fee £2.08 million from Newcastle) Transfer window outs Andreas Pereira (£8.55 million to Fulham) Tahith Chong (£1 million to Birmingham City) Released:  Paul Pogba, Nemanja Matic, Juan Mata, Lee Grant, Edinson Cavani, Jesse Lingard Loan:  Dean Henderson,  Alex Telles,  Eric Bailly,  Hannibal Mejibri,  Amad Diallo,  Alvaro Fernandez Goalkeepers David De Gea David truly is the human incarnation of that famous Gattuso quote "sometimes maybe good, sometimes maybe sh**".  I

Analysing Rio Ferdinand's 6 point plan for Erik ten Hag's Manchester United

"It’s so sad to see because it is not the club I played for. It is not what  Manchester United  stood for when I played for them, it is just chalk and cheese. I don’t see a Manchester United team out there fighting or playing with pride." -  Roy Keane After a season of utter embarrassment, this cowardly Manchester United squad will have a new set of coaches barking orders at them next season as Erik ten Hag has finally been confirmed as Manchester United manager.   Following the disastrous, pathetic, abomination of a footballing display away at Liverpool it was inevitable that the club would announce ten Hag to try and get the fans back onside.  Following the announcement, Rio Ferdinand felt the need to try and get his points across about how the new manager should be approaching the job prior to the defeat to Arsenal live on BT Sport, so I would like to look in depth at his 6 point plan and just how that could be achieved at Manchester United. Before I start going into the p

Manchester United 5 - 1 Leeds 14/08/2021

We're back! Pre game The city centre For the first time since Scott McTominay made Ederson look silly in the Manchester derby all that time ago, a capacity crowd was set to return to Old Trafford.  Videos of fighting in the city centre and policeman chasing after Leeds fans really ensured everyone new that not just the premier league was back, but one of its fiercest rivalries was too. Team news As always, twitter was full of complaints when 11:30 struck and the poor twitter admin knew it was time to release the team.   Starting in goal was David De Gea.  With Henderson out with COVID, there were no complaints about this one. The back 4 was as expected: Shaw, Maguire, Lindelof, AWB.  Absolutely no complaints with this one, we all knew Varane hadn't been registered so this was the obvious choice. Protecting the back 4, the infamous McFred!  Ole's go to defensive midfield partnership were sure to bring the effort, desire and running we've become accustomed to with these b

Manchester United squad preview 2021/22

Blurb & Intro The August boredom has hit so I thought I'd do my own little preview for the available Manchester United squad against Leeds.  These are my own judgements, not backed up by any statistics, however I will be following this up with one completely based on data after the first 10 games of the season.  Obviously this is all opinion based so here goes..! Goalkeepers My number 1 - Dean Henderson This is a topic that I'm sure will be heavily debated as it seems we are going to have a surplus of strong goalkeepers, but Dean Henderson is my number 1.  Supporting De Gea was a far easier task when he was the standout performer in a pathetic rearguard, but Henderson strikes me as far more commanding, a brilliant work ethic, a winner's attitude... everything we look for.  Yes, Dean may trail behind David in shot stopping but as a young goalkeeper I'm sure he will get there.  So for me, Hendo just fills me with that extra bit of confidence I feel you need to have

Progression is a rollercoaster, not a staircase

Progression is a rollercoaster, not a staircase I’m sure you have heard of at least one of these phrases: “keep moving forwards”, “things are looking up” or “It can only go up from here!”…   All of these supposedly motivational quotes have one thing in common – they portray success and an upwards and forwards journey. To some extent, I like these quotes as they imply a heaven-style location of success that we can all work towards giving us all a goal, vision or idea of the reward of our hard work.   However, when we look at the journey of progress rather than success, they simply couldn’t be more wrong. Firstly, let us look at the simple idea of a staircase.   If the queue for the lift is too long or there isn’t a working escalator, we will reluctantly take the stairs to walk from one floor to another.   For this example, we will be looking only at walking up a staircase.   As we walk up this staircase, one leg at a time, complaining about the out of use lift, we make the same

The (not so) Super League

What is it? To avoid all of the nonsense, here are the proposals 20 teams 15/20 in there every year 5/20 enter on merit This would not replace the premier league, instead it would replace the champions league Why is it being proposed? The simple answer is greed. The slightly longer answer regards the spats with UEFA.  The majority of the owners are involved with American company JP Morgan, which would effectively replace UEFA as the governing body for this European competition.  This is because the clubs want more power over their own rights with an opportunity to earn more money.  This has been in the works for a very long time, however it has been accelerated by the opposition to the (lack of) changes to the new champions league format that is not considered to favour the big clubs. Some consider this a negotiating tactic, others consider this as a concrete plan that is a certainty, only time will tell.  One thing is clear, the American owners driving this change appear to be cravi

How bad are bananas? - book review

How good is your carbon instinct? Unlike the book about virtual water, this book (albeit a revised version re-edited in 2020) is based on a concept little more familiar to the public tongue - the carbon footprint.  Similarly, this is a topic that has that has grown from a scary concept to a harsh reality since its original writing in 2010, whereas the concept of virtual water remains in its public infancy 10 years on from the book. Before I begin this report, I would like to address a common misconception I have witnessed across my A-Level study of climate change - a carbon footprint and carbon emissions are not exclusively to do with carbon dioxide.  Yes, carbon dioxide emissions are important and the increase in carbon dioxide production is a huge part of our role in enhancing the greenhouse effect, but the more "dangerous" greenhouse gas we tend to also produce on mass scale is methane.  It is considered to be 28 times more effective in radiation absorption (in Lehman
